‘Cloudy Morning Sky Sun’ Receives Honorary Mention at the IPA’s One Shot:Harmony-Competition
MISSOULA, MT, June 12, 2018 – The International Photography Awards (IPA) honor competition entry by fine art photographer Gabriele Golissa.
The word “harmony” embraces many different facets and meanings. A pleasing combination or arrangement of different colors, lines, or sounds; An agreement or accord between two or more parties; Calm or tranquility; When two or more different stories or accounts support each other; It means working together and creating or recognizing beauty through and because of differences.
In a world so filled with discord and conflict, the IPA’S One Shot:Harmony-Competition wants to highlight the beauty of unity and harmony that exists in all corners and in all aspects of life. Photographers from all over the world submitted images that show how our differences and unique qualities can bring us together, how beautiful the world is because of the diversity that exists – in nature, in culture, in humanity.
With “Cloudy Morning Sky Sun” fine art photographer Gabriele Golissa explores the ancient concept of Yin and Yang, two contrasting but also complimentary forces that interconnect to form a oneness. They ultimately describe duality not opposition: one cannot exist without the other. When both are in balance, harmony exists and oneness remains. When one predominates, the other is weakened and oneness is lost. While the Sun symbolizes Yang, she brings out both Yin and Yang qualities by splitting the image into a black-and-white part—changing this scene into a night sky with a Yin-Moon—and a colored part, both separated by a thin line. This line represents the Taiji, a border separating Yin and Yang and thereby erst creating duality. While we nowadays seem to live in a world of opposition, Gabriele Golissa still believes in co-existence and harmony as our true nature. “Cloudy Morning Sky Sun” received an honorary mention in the fine art category of IPA’s One Shot:Harmony.

About the Winner:
Gabriele Golissa is a fine art photographer with a passion for skies. Originally born in Germany, she has spent a lot of time in Montana, a state whose nickname is “Big Sky Country”. Photographing from both ground and air, Golissa insists on depicting the sky as she sees it, experimenting with aperture and shutter speed as well as image composition. She often places her prints beneath thick acrylic glass, adding depth and brilliancy to the image, bringing the sky back to life. She also prints on aluminum and canvas, surfaces that allow her to play, respectively, with color and softness. Golissa has just published Skies/Himmel, a fully bilingual art book (English/German) taking the reader on an inspiring and informative journey through her skies.
